American Society for the History of Rhetoric Interest Group

 The American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR) Interest Group of the Southern States Communication Association invites submissions for the 2012 convention at the historic St. Anthony Hotel. The reviewers will be especially interested in soliciting papers in two areas. First there is San Antonio, a space of complex identification narratives and race issues. Archival and rich contextual analyses of the Mexican War, immigration, Teddy Roosevelt and the "Rough Riders," and regional history are obvious fits here. Additionally, there is the conference theme of "Global Communication: Customs, Challenges and Changes." Again, San Antonio is helpful in figuring notions of urban and rural rhetorics, barbed wire enclosure and public spaces, and intercultural rhetoric and pedagogies that empower or disempower speech, religious or secular.
 
More broadly, the Interest Group is interested in all work that enhances the theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and languages. The Division will review two types of submissions: (1) Completed Papers and (2) Thematic Panels (please be sure to identify participants, as no submissions will be accepted with panelists from only one institution). Students submitting papers should clearly designate the paper as "STUDENT" on the cover page. The Division's top student paper and top faculty paper will be awarded; please be sure to remove author identification from individual submissions. Audio-visual resources will be extremely limited, so please limit requests and submit a clear justification for why AV would be necessary. Applied Communication Division

 The Applied Communication Division invites papers and panel proposals for competitive selection. We especially welcome papers and panels that address the convention theme, Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes. A broad interpretation of this theme is encouraged to foster research that explores applied communication (organizational, health, group, mass media, and more) and its impact on global communication.
 
Topics also may relate to disciplines in organizational communication, health communication, training and development, consulting, public relations, instructional development, mass media, and culture. The Applied Communication Division will seek opportunities to co-sponsor panels with other divisions related to these fields. Papers and panel submissions that support intersections among disciplines are encouraged. Students especially are encouraged to submit papers.
 
Papers and panels may report empirical findings of applied research projects; advance applied communication theory; discuss ways to apply communication research in organizations or teaching; or review, critique or synthesize applied communication theory or methods. In addition to traditional panels of related research presentations, we invite innovative panel formats such as: round-table discussions addressing an important issue, interviews with prominent scholars or spotlights on their work, discussions with local community members on issues significant to the region, and workshops or collaborative discussions on applied research and teaching.
 
Papers must include two file attachments: (1) a file containing a cover sheet listing the paper title and author name(s), affiliation, e-mail, physical addresses and phone number for all authors, and (2) a file including a 50-word abstract and the completed paper not to exceed 25 double-spaced pages excluding references and appendices. For the purposes of blind review, please omit all author-identifying information from the manuscript. Any submission not meeting the requirements above will not be accepted for review. All papers submitted will be considered for the division’s Top Paper Award.
 
For student papers, indicate “STUDENT” on the cover sheet. The division’s Top Student Paper will be submitted for consideration for the SSCA Bostrom Young Scholar Award.
 
Panel proposals must include one attachment containing the following: (1) the SSCA Program Proposal Form (available on the SSCA website), (2) a one-page rationale for the proposed panel, (3) a brief (50-word) description for the program, and (4) a list of all participants including names, affiliations and contact information (e-mail, physical address and phone number).
 
Submissions must be received by the division program planner no later than Friday, September 16, 2011. Submissions must be sent electronically as email file attachments in Microsoft Word. Document file names should include the name of the division and a short paper title; e.g.: Applied Comm-short title.doc. To assist with the blind review process, do not identify the author in the file name or any other document properties. Please type “SSCA” in the subject line of your email.

Association for Communication Administration Interest Group

 The ACA calls for papers and programs that explore ways in which communication administrators engage customs, challenges, and changes in higher education.  Submissions that focus on the convention theme are strongly encouraged; as the convention theme is global communication, we especially welcome panels or papers that discuss similarities/differences across cultures on promotion and tenure, department structure and identity, and faculty and student recruitment.  The ACA encourages submissions that will reflect the diversity of communication departments across the south.  Send completed papers and panel proposals to Linda Pysher Jurczak, Valdosta State University at [email protected] by September 10, 2011.

The Communication Theory Division invites submissions for competitive papers, panels, or roundtable discussions for the 2012 convention. Community College Division

The Community College Division invites submissions for the 2012 Convention. While all papers and panel proposals will be considered, we are especially interested in papers and panels focusing on this year’s theme: Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes--either one, two, or all aspects of the theme. Submissions may include papers, panels, roundtables or discussions:

Submission deadline: September 16, 2011 (6 pm CDT).
 
For papers, please include an abstract of no more than 100 words, and limit papers to 25 pages. Remove all references to the author in the paper. Be sure to clearly identify papers that are “Student Authored” or “Debut.” Include a separate title page giving the name, affiliation, email, and address of the author or authors.
 
For panel proposals, please include a title; abstract of no more than 100 words; name, affiliation, email, and address, of the contact person; and names, affiliations, e-mails, and addresses of all participants.
 
For G.I.F.T.C. submissions, in addition to ideas for teaching Public Speaking, ideas for teaching any aspect of communication are encouraged. Send a detailed description of your idea along with your name, affiliation, email address, and phone. All ideas presented must be original to the presenter and must have been tested in the classroom.
 
The use of AV equipment is strongly discouraged.

Ethnography Interest Group

 The Ethnography Interest Group invites submissions for competitive papers, panels, and roundtable discussions for the 2012 Southern States Communication Association Convention in San Antonio, TX that use or discuss ethnography. This year’s theme is Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes and we welcome paper and panel submissions that directly and creatively address this theme. In addition, we are interested in panels that explore the craft of ethnography: if you are interested in organizing a panel that engages participants in the writing, performance or ethics of ethnography or ethnographic approaches, please contact the program planner.
 
All PAPER submissions to the Ethnography Interest Group should include two file attachments. File 1 should include a Word Document containing a cover sheet listing the paper title and author name(s), affiliation, e-mail, physical addresses and phone number for all authors. File 2 should include a Word Document that includes a 150-word abstract along with the paper not to exceed 30 double-spaced pages, excluding references and appendices.
 
All PANEL submissions to the Ethnography Interest Group should include two file attachments. File 1 should include a Word Document containing a cover sheet listing the panel title and presenters’ names, affiliation, email, physical address and phone number for all authors. Freedom of Speech

 Southern States Communication Association's Freedom of Speech Division is accepting scholarly papers and panel proposals on free speech related issues for presentation at the 2012 SSCA convention in San Antonio, TX, on April 11-15, 2012.
 
We especially welcome papers and panels that consider the convention theme of "Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes." This theme is especially pertinent for our division in light of this year's events across the world. We have seen massive upheaval and repression as people all over the world have used technology and protest actions to make their voices heard. We have also witnessed interesting legal battles that sought to determine the limits of free speech. We are interested in papers exploring all facets of freedom of speech.
 
All papers and panels should be submitted electronically and prepared for blind review.  Each submission should contain two files.  For papers, submit a file containing the manuscript with all identifying information removed and a separate file for the title page with complete contact information for the author(s).  Panel proposals should also be formatted for blind review with a cover page with the names, institutions, mailing and email addresses of all participants and a separate file with a panel rationale, titles and abstracts for the panel, and a brief abstract for the conference program.  Please send documents as Microsoft Word documents or as  PDF files.  Paper submitters should indicate if the manuscript is a debut paper or a student paper as they will be eligible for the Top Student Paper Award.  All completed papers submitted by the deadline will compete for the Gregg Phifer Award.

Gender Studies Division

 The Gender Studies Division invites competitive scholarly papers and panel proposals which represent a creative range of gender related issues. Papers and panels that consider the 2012 theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes” are encouraged. Areas for research/panels might include: the impact of social media on gender (complications, challenges, advancements, etc.), teaching gender in a global community, and global representations, disciplining, and/or performances of gender. The convention website http://www.ssca.net/convention-info/index.php provides more information and resources on global communication as well as instructions on the submission format for papers and panels.
 
Panel proposals should focus on a theme relevant to gender studies. Panels may consist of a chair, individual paper presenters, and a critic/respondent. Alternate formats are also encouraged (round-table discussions with or without a moderator/facilitator, workshops with a clearly defined focus and a specified leader, or other unique formats). In alternative formats, respondents may be included or omitted as appropriate.
 
Also note that the Gender Studies Division encourages submissions to G.I.F.T.S (G.I.F.T.S submissions to do not have to be related to Speech classes). Ideas for G.I.F.T.S can be submitted to the Community College Division (Paula Rodriguez at [email protected])
 
The Gender Studies Division also seeks nominees for our Gender Scholar of the Year award to be honored at convention. Nominations will be collected and reviewed by the Gender Studies Division officers, and a short list will be confirmed. Nominees will be contacted to determine their interest and availability and to request vitae from each for a final vote. The scholar who is selected will be spotlighted with an interview/discussion session. Note on your nomination the name of the scholar, the school affiliation, and a brief rationale behind the nomination.

Intercultural Communication Division

 The Intercultural Communication Division invites submissions of papers and panel proposals on any aspect of intercultural communication. Papers and panels related to the convention theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges and Changes,”will be given special attention as will panel proposals that address diversity, immigration, and civil rights issues in the Texas/Southwest region. Papers should be free from sexist, discriminatory language and include a 100-150 word abstract. Author identification must be removed from the essay. In addition, the title page should include name, mailing address, email address, telephone and fax number, and school affiliation of author(s). Students should write STUDENT in the upper right hand corner of the title page. The recipient of the Division’s Top Paper award will receive a plaque. Kenneth Burke Society Interest Group

The Kenneth Burke Society of the Southern States Communication Association (SSCA) invites completed papers and panel proposals for the 2012 SSCA convention in San Antonio, Texas. The Burke Society seeks scholarship that explores, extends, or applies any aspect of Burkean scholarship to the study of Communication. Papers and panel proposals that explore the convention theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes,” will be given special consideration. In addition to papers and panels connected to the convention theme, the Burke Society is interested in submissions related to the host city/region, contemplating ways to teach Burke, or connecting Burkean scholarship to areas of research beyond rhetorical studies.
 
The Kenneth Burke Society is particularly friendly toward graduate student work, including debut scholars, whether submitted as competitive papers or thematic panels; please identify student work. Burke scholars are invited to submit alternative panel formats such as interactive sessions, workshops, or roundtable discussions. Top paper and top student paper will be awarded. The top student submission will be nominated for the Bostrom Award.

Language and Social Interaction Division

The Language and Social Interaction Division of the Southern States Communication Association invites submissions of competitive papers and panel proposals for the 2012 convention in San Antonio, TX. The division is interested in submissions focusing on language, discourse, or gesture employing such methods as conversation analysis, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, ethnography of communication, ethnomethodology, rhetorical analysis of language, or quantitative studies of language variables. We welcome proposals using LSI approaches across all communication contexts, including interpersonal, small group, organizational, health, public & political, or mediated. Proposals related to the convention theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes,” or to the convention site, are especially encouraged. The division will submit the top graduate student paper to the SSCA vice president to compete for the Robert Bostrom Young Scholar Award.

Mass Communication Division

The Mass Communication Division invites competitive scholarly papers and panel proposals on all aspects of mass media, mass communication, computer-mediated communication, and new media technologies for the 2012 SSCA Annual Convention.
 
Submissions that reflect the convention theme are especially encouraged. The Mass Communication Division welcomes diversity in scholarly panel proposals and research in areas that include, but are not limited to, emerging technologies, the Internet, print journalism, on-line journalism, television, radio, film, international broadcasting, advertising, political communication within the media, and more.
 
In addition to traditional research papers and panels, the mass communication division is soliciting proposals for production showcases, presentations, and other innovative discussion formats about issues that are focal to the discipline. Performance Studies Division

The Performance Studies invites submissions for the 2012 convention in San Antonio, TX April 11 - April 15, 2012. Submissions related to the conference theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges and Changes” are encouraged, as are submissions focusing on issues relevant to the convention location in San Antonio (e.g. tourism local politics and history). Submissions of performances, papers and panels on all topics of interest to the Division are also welcome. The Division’s top graduate student paper will be entered into the Robert Bostrom Young Scholar Award competition for the overall top graduate student paper in the Association. We also seek nominations for the Southern States Outstanding Performance Studies Scholar of the Year Award. Audio-visual resources will be extremely limited so please limit requests and submit a clear justification for why AV would be necessary. All materials must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word or PDF format to [email protected] between August 15th 2011 and September 16th, 2011. Performance and panel proposals should include a rationale. The Popular Communication Division invites competitive papers, media presentations, and panel proposals for the 2012 Southern States Communication Association annual convention. The division welcomes scholarship from a variety of theoretical or methodological approaches that are related to media, culture, any related facet within a popular communication framework, or any combination that explores such issues. Special consideration will be given to submissions that emphasize cross-disciplinary scholarship, relate to the convention theme, “Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes”.

Completed papers should remain within 25 pages, begin with an abstract, and should not include the author's/authors' names anywhere in the document. Public Relations Division

The Public Relations Division invites competitive scholarly papers and panel proposals to be considered for presentation. The division welcomes a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches to public relations issues. Papers and panels that consider the 2012 theme, "Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes" are strongly encouraged.
 
All papers must include a 75-100 word abstract and be no longer than 25 pages (excluding tables and references). Authors should not be identifiable in the text of papers. Include a detachable cover page with the names, affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and email addresses of all the authors. Student papers should be clearly marked undergraduate student or graduate student.
 
Panel Proposals should include: (1) the Program Proposal Form, (2) a one page rationale for the proposed program or abstracts of the proposed papers, (3) the program copy, if applicable, and (4) a list of all proposed participants, including their names, affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. Top paper recognition is given for competitive papers. The top graduate student paper will be submitted for consideration for the SSCA Bostrom Award.

The Division’s top graduate student paper will be entered into the Robert Bostrom Young Scholar Award competition for the overall top graduate student paper in the Association. The Division awards a top student paper and top faculty paper. Southern Argumentation and Forensics Division

The Southern Forensics Division invites papers, panels, posters, and workshops concerning argumentation (e.g., theory, criticism, pedagogy) or competitive speech and debate (e.g., pedagogy, history, praxis, culture, forensics across the curriculum, Urban Debate Leagues, public debate formats). Non-traditional formats such as roundtable discussions are encouraged. The division is especially interested in submissions related to the conference theme, Global Communication: Customs, Challenges, and Changes.
 
The Division supports the SSCA Town Hall Debate. The debate topic should relate to the conference theme. Those interested in debating, moderating, or coordinating the event should contact the division planner.
 
Individual paper submissions related to the convention theme, teaching methods, research strategies, and other topics of interest are strongly encouraged. For peer review, names should appear on the cover page only. The Division will award prizes for the Top Paper and Top Student Paper. Students submitting papers should designate the paper as “STUDENT” on the cover page.
 
For panels or workshops, submit the official Program Proposal Form, the title and an abstract that explains the idea, as well as abstracts for the individual components when appropriate (e.g., a panel of papers). Submitters must also provide a 250-word rationale for the proposed panel, noting the expertise of the participants to address the topics covered by the panel. On an attached page, include the names, affiliations, mail addresses, phone/fax numbers, and e-mail addresses for all participants.
 
The Division will award the Forensics Educator or Contributor of the Year Award. Those wishing to nominate a peer should include a cover letter, the C.V. for the nominee, and up to five pages of supporting material including student and peer letters of support. Self-nominations are welcome.

Philosophy & Ethics of Communication Interest Group

The Philosophy & Ethics of Communication Interest Group invites submissions for the 2012 convention. While all paper and panel proposals shall be considered, those that focus on the philosophical and ethical dimensions of this year’s theme – Global Communication: Customs, Challenges and Changes – will be particularly welcome. Submissions may include papers or panels.
 
Submission deadline: September 16, 2011 (6 p.m. CDT)
 
For papers, please include an abstract of no more than 100 words, and limit papers to no more than 25 pages. Be sure to identify papers that are “Student Authored” or “Debut.” Include a separate title page giving the name, affiliation, email and address of the author or authors.
 
For panel proposals, please include a title, abstract of no more than 100 words; names, affiliations, emails and addresses of all participants.
 
The use of AV equipment is strongly discouraged.
